What are Sumac Berries?

Sumac berries come from the sumac plant. These plants are native to the Middle East and certain parts of Asia. The small, dark red or purplish berries have a tart, lemony flavor profile and are commonly dried and ground into a powder to be used in Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, and North American cuisine. Think of them as the sour patch kids of the spice world – they start off tart and then leave you with a sweet aftertaste.

Wait, aren’t Sumac Berries Poisonous?

Well, yes. Technically there are types of sumac berries that are poisonous, however the ones we’re talking about (and sell) are definitely not one in the same! Poison sumac is native to North America and produces white or greenish berries. DO NOT EAT THOSE. Those are poisonous. The sumac berries we’re talking about are indigenous to the Middle East and Asia, these berries are 100% safe to consume.

What can I cook with them?

If you don’t have any lemon on hand, sumac berries make a great substitute. Although if you don’t have any lemon on hand, it’s very likely you probably don’t have any sumac berries on hand either. Even if you do have some lemon on hand, try trading these two out! We love the tangy, tart, punch of flavor these berries deliver and think they’re a great addition to a wide variety of dishes and cocktails. We’ve added them to salads, soups, stews, roasted veggies, marinades, rubs for a variety of meats, hummus, and even our cocktails. This little berry is so versatile, you’ll be kicking yourself for waiting this long to dress up your dishes with them. Not to mention, your guest will be wowed by subbing these little guys in instead of a lemon wedge.

What are the health benefits?

Sumac berries have been used for centuries in traditional medicine. They most commonly treat digestive and respiratory ailments, skin conditions, help lower blood sugar and have anti-inflammatory properties. These little berries have also been used to treat kidney stones and urinary tract infections for centuries. Not to mention they’re also high in antioxidants, as most of our featured spices and herbs are.
